Add a bit of sweetness to your healthy snack by making chocolate hummus. It’s quick to make, easy, and vegan!
Jump to RecipeIt’s the time of the year that everyone seems to be trying to find those healthy snacks. We are getting close to the summer months and laying around the pool, the beach, or the park. In the past, I’ve made a few variations of traditional hummus but this time wanted to try a dessert hummus recipe. It’s perfect when I want something sweet without all the added sugar of a regular dessert.
The main ingredient in any hummus recipe is always chickpeas, also called garbanzo beans. You can find these canned with other beans. I always find mine right next to the black beans.
To get the chocolate hummus taste, you’ll add cocoa powder. You can decide if you want unsweetened cocoa powder to cut down on sugar or not. I use regular cocoa powder because I was looking for a healthy chocolate hummus recipe that still was sweet like a dessert. It helps curb my chocolate cravings without the added dairy and sugar.
The sweetness comes from the pure maple syrup. Trust me, you want the good stuff, don’t go cheap on the maple syrup. It makes a big difference.
Round that out with a bit of vanilla extract and coconut oil and you have your chocolate hummus! Coconut oil will be liquid at room temperature as long as it is above about 76F in your home. Otherwise, warm it for just a few seconds in the microwave until it has melted enough to pour into the other ingredients.
Adding some sea salt helps to give the chocolate dessert hummus that salty and sweet combination. It’s personally a favorite, so I enjoyed it. I think that’s also why pretzels were my favorite thing to dip in the homemade chocolate hummus.
I love recipes with simple ingredients that I can easily find in the grocery store. This sweet hummus is the best way to have a dessert without feeling guilty about it. You can choose to dip fresh fruit, apple slices, graham crackers, or pretzels in the hummus. My favorite was sliced fresh strawberries and pretzels.
