Homemade Vegan Beyond Meat Burgers Copycat Recipe

Beyond Meat Burgers are plant-based patties that replicate the taste, texture, and appearance of beef burgers without using animal products.

Jump to Recipe

Veggie burgers are part of a broader trend toward plant-based foods, driven by concerns over health, the environment, and animal welfare.

Store-bought plant-based vegan burgers often use pea protein and coconut oil or canola oil. To make these at home, I used tofu and a variety of sauces to make the beef patties as close to ground beef burgers as possible.

We were surprised at how close this veggie burger recipe tastes to the ones we buy at grocery stores. They are very similar to Justin’s homemade BBQ burger recipe since both use BBQ sauce to give it that extra bit of flavor.

I was worried about the taste of the beets in this recipe, but you don’t notice their flavor, and they help add to the texture and color of the Beyond Meat burger patties. These truly feel like the real thing when you are eating them.

Beyond Meat Burgers Serving Suggestions & Tips

  • The meat will be soft in the middle, even after baking. Be careful when moving it to the bottom bun so it doesn’t fall apart. This also makes the burgers hard to grill.
  • You can prepare the burgers in the oven as directed, or fry in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Toast your burger buns to a golden brown for a more crunchy burger.
  • Try using black beans in place of the chickpeas for another vegan option.
  • If you don’t have fresh minced garlic, use garlic powder instead.
  • Serve with a side of potato salad, French fries, or potato chips.
  • Tofu is the main ingredient, but you can also use 8 ounces of Tempah in its place.
  • If you prefer the delicious burgers to have a spicy kick, add more hot sauce to your burger mixture.

Favorite Burger Toppings

  • Sliced bell pepper
  • Slice of cheese (make sure it’s vegan)
  • Sliced tomato
  • Lettuce
  • Pickles
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Caramelized onions
  • Sweet pickle relish
  • Sliced red onion or yellow onion

Beyond Meat Burgers Step by Step

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp flax
  • 2 ½ tbsp water
  • ½ cup walnut halves
  • 8 oz tofu, cubed
  • 14 oz chickpeas, drained
  • ½ cup red onion, diced
  • 1 medium beet, chopped
  • 3 tbsp BBQ sauce
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp hot sauce
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp garlic, minced
  • Hamburger buns

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, whisk the flax and water together and set aside.

In a food processor, grind the walnuts into crumbs then place them in a large bowl.

Add the tofu and chickpeas to the food processor and pulse until crumbly.

Mix the tofu and chickpeas with the walnuts.

Add the diced red onions, beet, BBQ sauce, Dijon mustard, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, hot sauce, cumin, paprika, salt, and black pepper to the food processor and blend until smooth.

Pour the beet mixture, garlic, and flax egg mixture into the large bowl and stir to combine.

Use a ½ cup measuring cup to scoop each burger and add to the prepared pan, using the flat side of the cup to flatten the burgers.

Bake for 30 minutes or until crispy on the edges.

Carefully move the warm patty to the bottom of a hamburger bun then add your favorite toppings and serve warm.

Beyond Meat Burgers Leftovers

Storage: Store leftover beyond meat patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.

Reheating: The best way to reheat the patties is in the air fryer, toaster oven, oven, or large skillet over medium heat. It will take about 5-10 minutes to warm them through.

Freezing: To freeze, place the cooked patties between parchment paper then cover with aluminum foil. Place in a freezer-safe container for up to 1 month. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or prepare from frozen.

I haven’t had the opportunity to try the original but I must say the copycat recipe sounds amazing. I don’t make burgers often as I worry about the fat content but as these don’t have meat they’d be so much healthier.
