Make your own homemade Irish Cream for a delicious, smooth, dairy-free copycat of Bailey’s Irish Cream Liqueur.

There are so many delicious drink recipes made with Bailey’s Irish Cream, and they especially show up around St. Patrick’s Day here in the United States. The next time you go to make an Irish Cream recipe, try making yours from scratch.

This easy recipe only takes a few minutes, and you can customize it to your personal tastes with only a handful of ingredients.

My homemade version of Irish cream is perfect to make along with some Creme de Menthe for a variety of cocktails. By making it free from dairy, it can be enjoyed by those who have a dairy allergy, such as myself, and for those following a vegan diet.

Easy Ingredients

Irish Whiskey

You can use any brand of Irish whiskey for this recipe. If you are keeping it vegan, then opt for Jameson Whiskey or Powers Whiskey. You’ll need 1/2 cup of whiskey for this recipe to make it as written. If you want your Irish Cream to be a bit stronger, add a little bit more. Or you can lower the amount of whiskey for a lighter version of homemade Baileys Irish Cream.

Sweetened Condensed Coconut Milk

To keep this recipe dairy-free and vegan, you’ll want to use sweetened condensed coconut milk. While it can be made with regular sweetened condensed milk, this ensures you keep the recipe dairy free while also maintaining the consistency necessary for a creamy liqueur. I didn’t taste the coconut at all in the final product, but my husband said he noticed it a tiny bit.

Almond Milk

Again, keeping this recipe without dairy means using almond milk instead of whole milk or a light cream.

Cocoa Powder

I used unsweetened cocoa powder for my recipe. If you use sweetened cocoa powder, you’ll want to lessen the amount of maple syrup in the recipe so it isn’t too sweet.

Vanilla Extract

The best flavor comes from one teaspoon vanilla extract, although you can also use vanilla bean paste or almond extract.

Coffee

A dark coffee is best, although you can use any coffee. This uses a small amount of coffee, just enough to give a hint of coffee flavor to the recipe.

Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is your basic sweetener for the Irish Cream. If you use sweetened cocoa powder, you can lower the amount of maple syrup.

Homemade Irish Cream Step by Step

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Irish Whiskey
  • 11 oz sweetened condensed coconut milk
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • ½ tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract or almond extract
  • ¼ cup dark coffee, cooled to room temperature
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup

Preparation

Pour all ingredients into a blender and mix until combined

Pour into an airtight bottle or container and store in the refrigerator

Homemade Irish Cream Leftovers

Storage: Store in an airtight container, such as a mason jar, in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Freezing: Due to the alcohol content, this won’t freeze well.
