The Blackberry Fizz is a refreshing vibrant drink that balances the sweetness of blackberries with the warmth of rum and the sparkle of soda.
In the summer, the blackberry bushes produce hundreds of fresh berries, so we are always coming up with a great way to use them. This time, we wanted to try to make a cocktail with the delicious tart berries.
A classic cocktail is the blackberry gin fizz, but I’m not too fond of gin. Instead, we made new variations of the drink and used light rum for the refreshing cocktail.
This drink is a perfect choice for a lazy afternoon on a hot summer day. You can make big batch cocktail and serve them in tall glasses instead of individual servings.
History of the Fizz
In the late 19th century, the fizz grew in prominence as soda water became a trendy ingredient. The cocktail’s popularity soared during the early 20th century, particularly with the advent of the Prohibition era (1920–1933) in the United States. The Ramos Gin Fizz, a luxurious version from New Orleans with cream and egg whites, became a cultural phenomenon. After Prohibition, fizzes remained a staple in cocktail culture, with bartenders experimenting with new ingredients and techniques.
Serving Suggestions & Tips
- We prefer a rum type of cocktail, but you could replace that with different spirits such as a shot of vodka, gin, brandy, whiskey, or tequila.
- For a sweeter drink use flavored soda, like lemon-lime or ginger ale, instead of soda water.
- Add a dash of lime juice or bitters or substitute honey syrup or simple syrup for the sugar for a more complex flavor.
- Skip the rum and increase the soda to make this into a mocktail; optionally add a splash of blackberry or lime cordial.
- Garnish your drink with real fruit, such as a lemon wedge, lemon zest, or fresh blackberries.
