Creme de Menthe Drink Recipes for Christmas Time

Creme de menthe is a sweet, mint-flavored liqueur made from peppermint or spearmint. It’s perfect for a creme de menthe drink in the holiday season.

In the summer months, our garden is overflowing with mint leaves. We are constantly out there trimming back the plants and harvesting mint leaves. Once we have enough, I like to make homemade creme de menthe liqueur that we can put away for special occasions and holiday celebrations in the wintertime.

Crème de menthe is a key ingredient in many holiday cocktail recipes. The green color and minty flavor both mean the sweet treats are perfect for a celebration on Christmas Eve or a Christmas party at that time of year. The mint flavor of crème de menthe reminds me of a candy cane in drink form. It makes the perfect cocktail addition for a festive drink.

About Crème de Menthe

  • Color: Creme de menthe is available in two colors: bright green and white or clear. The green version gets its color from added coloring, while the white version is clear. Both types, however, have the same minty taste.
  • Flavor: It has a strong peppermint flavor, making this mint liqueur a common ingredient in cocktails and desserts, especially for holiday parties.
  • Alcohol Content: Typically, crème de menthe has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of around 25-30%, but this can vary by brand.
  • Uses in Cocktails: Popular drinks that include crème de menthe are the Grasshopper, which combines it with creme de cocoa and cream, and the Stinger, which pairs it with brandy.
  • Culinary Uses: It’s also used to flavor and color desserts, such as in grasshopper pie or as a drizzle over ice cream.
  • Origin: The liqueur is believed to have originated in France, where it has been produced since the 19th century.
