Taco Pizza Recipe with Homemade Taco Seasoning

Taco night and pizza night are both favorites at our house. So one evening we decided to try to combine them into Taco Pizza! And no, it isn’t just getting beef on a regular pizza. I wanted it to truly combine the best of both meals. 

My favorite part of a pizza: the doughy crust. Not the edge-of-the-pizza-with-no-toppings crust, but the under-everything-else crust. My least favorite part of a taco: the shell because they always fall apart. 

Taco Pizza uses a pizza crust with typical taco fillings on top. Instead of red sauce, I used a combination of cream cheese and sour cream. The cream cheese helps to thicken up the sour cream without adding too much flavor. I was worried that having only sour cream would be too thin and the toppings would fall off. 

Other than that, we made the rest of the toppings for this Taco Pizza in the same way we would make it for regular taco night. Similar to tacos, you can make this pizza customized for each person depending on which toppings they prefer. 

The pieces you see photographed were Justin’s because he will eat it with everything on top! I don’t like fresh tomatoes, so mine didn’t have that. For the boys, we did only a very small amount of each vegetable in an attempt to get them to eat something new. Spoiler alert: they still weren’t very fond of this meal. But, we are working on it. 

For simplicity and time management, I used prepackaged pizza dough. When I don’t make my own dough, I buy the one canned near the biscuits at the grocery store. It isn’t quite as fluffy and delicious as homemade, but it’s much quicker when I don’t have time for the bread machine to make the dough

Homemade Taco Seasoning

I’ve been making my own taco seasoning. The flavor is a bit different from the store-bought, but it’s much cheaper and saves on a lot of packaging waste. I make this in a large amount and then use what I need. The rest stays stored with all of my herbs and spices.

Simple Ingredients

Pizza Dough

The easiest method is to purchase refrigerated pizza dough from your local grocery store if you don’t want to make homemade pizza dough. If you can’t find pizza dough, you can also use crescent roll dough and roll that out, pinching the seams together to seal the crescent rolls into a large dough. 

Ground Beef

​Browned ground beef is the base for most tacos, so that’s what was used for this easy taco pizza recipe. You can substitute it with other meat or beans if needed. 

Water

The water helps the taco seasoning stick to the meat.

Make your own taco seasoning or purchase it with other Mexican food at the grocery store. 

Sour Cream & Cream Cheese

The “sauce” for this taco pizza is made from a mixture of sour cream and cream cheese. By combining the two, you get the delicious taste of sour cream while making it thick enough to spread by adding cream cheese. 

Cheddar Cheese

We prefer extra sharp cheddar cheese when it comes to Taco Tuesday at our house. But you can use any Mexican blend cheese or other melty cheese. 

Substitutions and Toppings

Taco Pizza makes a great dinner for the family. Or it can be used as an appetizer. 

  • Substitute shredded chicken, ground turkey, or ground pork for the ground beef
  • Add refried beans, black beans, or a bean mixture to your taco pizza
  • Top with black olives, green onions, red onions, romaine lettuce, bell peppers, or avocado
  • Season with cayenne pepper, additional chili powder, or ground cumin
  • Add a sauce such as taco sauce or enchilada sauce

Taco Pizza Step by Step

Ingredients

  • 1 can pizza dough (refrigerated)
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 3 tbsp taco seasoning (or 1 packet)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 8 oz cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese (shredded)
  • taco toppings

Preparation

Bake the pizza crust according to the directions until it is golden brown. If you are using a pizza stone, make sure that preheats with the oven for the best results. Let it cool for about 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat.

Drain the ground beef and return it to the pan. Stir in the water and 2 tbsp of taco seasoning, then bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.

Reduce to medium heat and cook, uncovered, for about 5 minutes, stirring often, until most of the moisture has evaporated.

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, cream cheese, and 1 tbsp of taco seasoning. Stir until they are completely combined. It’s ok if there are a few lumps.

Once the crust has cooled, spread the cream cheese mixture over the pizza crust, covering it all the way to the edges.

Sprinkle the cooked taco meat over the sauce. It may not completely cover, which is ok. Just try to spread it out as evenly as possible.

Top the ground beef with your favorite taco toppings, such as cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, etc.

Cut into pieces about 2-inch square and serve immediately.

Taco Pizza Leftovers

Storage: Store leftover taco pizza in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. After that, the taco pizza sauce will start to make the crust too soggy. 

Reheating: Taco pizza leftovers are good cold, but if you want to reheat them, I suggest placing them in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 10 minutes, until everything is warmed through.

Ingredients

  • 1 can pizza dough (refrigerated)

Instructions

  • Bake the pizza dough as directed
  • Meanwhile, in a medium skillet, brown the ground beef until cooked through

  • Add the water and 2 tbsp taco seasoning and bring to a boil
  • Lower the heat to medium and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until most of the moisture has evaporated
  • In a medium mixing bowl, thoroughly combine the sour cream, cream cheese, and 1 tbsp taco seasoning
  • Once the pizza crust has cooled for about 20 minutes, spread the sour cream mixture over the entire crust
  • Evenly spread the ground beef on top of the sour cream sauce
  • Top with your desired taco toppings, such as tomatoes, onion, peppers, etc.
  • Sprinkle the cheese over the entire pizza
  • Cut into pieces about 2-inch square and serve immediately
