Break out the slow cooker this fall for more than just a hearty dinner. It can be used to create a warm dessert such as this apple crumble.
As the weather cools off and we dip into Fall, it’s time for all of the warm comfort foods that a slow cooker brings. And I don’t just mean soups and stews for dinner. The slow cooker is also great for warm drinks and a hot dessert.
A few years ago, I started making my mother-in-law’s recipe for apple crisp. I took the idea of that recipe but decided to try it out in the slow cooker. It was so easy, and made the house smell amazing for hours!

Slow Cooker Apple Crumble Step by Step
Ingredients
- 4 red apples, thinly sliced and cored
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tbsp flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 2 cups plain bread crumbs
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 8 tbsp butter

Preparation
In a large bowl, combine the apples, sugar, and lemon juice.

In another large bowl, whisk the flour, cinnamon, bread crumbs, and brown sugar. Use a pastry blender or two butter knives to cut in the butter until a crumbly mixture forms.

Layer 1/3 of the bread crumb mixture in the bottom of the slow cooker. Add half of the apples on top. Add another layer of bread crumbs, the remaining apples, then top with the remaining bread crumbs.

Cover and cook on high for 4 hours. Serve warm with whipped topping or ice cream.

Leftovers
Leftover apple crumble can be stored in an airtight container once it has cooled completely. Place it in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days. Apple crumble can be enjoyed cold or warmed on the stovetop over medium heat for about 5-10 minutes, until warmed through.

Slow Cooker Apple Crumble FAQs
Any red apple will work, but I like to use gala apples for this. They are firm so hold their shape, and not too sweet or tart.
There are multiple ways to cut the butter into the crumble. Check out this website for an explanation: https://www.landolakes.com/expert-advice/how-to-cut-in-butter/
