Having an easy side to go along with a main dish can round out a delicious meal for your family. One of our go-to sides is rice. There are many ways you can make rice so that it goes perfectly with the rest of your dinner.

I like to use my rice steamer when we cook rice. It makes it easy, and the cleanup is minimal. Plus, you set the appliance and it does the rest of the work. I’ve used the instant pot as well, but it takes longer because of the time it takes to pressurize.

We’ve made quite a few types of rice in the past, including a box of Zatarain’s rice in the steamer. But this recipe lets you customize exactly the flavor you want and need.

The first time I made herbed rice, it was to go with our Italian-Herb Crusted Pork Tenderloin recipe. Since that uses both thyme and rosemary, that’s what we put into the rice along with a few other seasonings.

Step by Step

Place the hot cooked rice in a medium mixing bowl. Add the butter and stir until it melts.

Stir to coat the rice with seasonings and serve immediately.

Leftovers

Any leftover herbed rice can be stored in a container in the refrigerator. When you want to reheat, add a small amount of butter to the rice and cook either in the microwave or in a small pot over medium heat. Stir often until the rice is warmed through.

  1. We grew up eating plain, white rice so when we discovered flavoured, herbed rice, it was glorious! This looks delicious and can’t wait to try it.

Thank you for this recipe. I always eat rice (as it is a common side dish here in Japan) but I should spice it up with things like herbs! Thanks for the idea!

  3. I like to put herbs in my butter already, sounds like it would save me a step with this recipe too if the butter already has herbs in it. I like Rice as a side dish, good to mix up how you prepare it to keep things interesting at meal time.

  4. Love this, as some times rice can be a bit bland so it is a great idea to jazz things up a little. This will be perfect for my curry evening x

Oh i have tried this before. Although what i had have local herbs as they are more accessible in my area.. I honestly enjoyed it more than typical fried rice.. The aroma is what really makes this dish stand out
