Pumpkin Pie Smoothie is a healthier way to enjoy the pumpkin spice season. It’s packed with protein and perfect for breakfast or a snack.

When we make homemade pumpkin puree, we tend to have a lot of it from just one pumpkin. When that happens, we set out to make all of the pumpkin foods we can! Of course, most of the pumpkin recipes you’ll find are baked goods and desserts. As a gourd, pumpkin can also be tasty in soups and stews, but that doesn’t seem to be as common. Pumpkin Pie Smoothie is a bit more of a healthy option because it’s packed with protein as well as fruit and vegetables plus natural sugars. Yes, it’s not the most healthy thing you can eat, but it’s more healthy than the (delicious) Pumpkin Roll

Over the years, we’ve come up with and made quite a few recipes that include pumpkin and pumpkin puree. It’s so yummy, and only made for a short time every year. The hardest part of making this smoothie is waiting for the banana to freeze. If you know you are going to be making a smoothie for yourself, or a batch to share, make sure you put the bananas in the freezer a few hours before so they are frozen.

If you don’t have time to freeze the banana, add a few cubes of ice to thicken it up. The benefit of the frozen banana is to thicken without watering it down.

You can also use regular yogurt rather than Greek yogurt, but again, you will lose some of the thick, creamy texture. Also, Greek yogurt has more protein in it, so the protein count will be lower with regular yogurt. We use unsweetened almond milk for almost everything. If you buy the sweetened or vanilla milk, you may want to cut back on the maple syrup. It will already have the sweetener from the milk.

One last note: make sure you use pure maple syrup. There’s a huge difference between pure syrup and “breakfast syrup” such as Aunt Jemima’s.

Step by Step

Freeze the banana ahead of time. Once you are ready to make the smoothie, add all of your ingredients to the blender. Blend for about two minutes, until it’s smooth.

Pour into serving glasses and garnish with a pinch of pumpkin pie spice.

    • We don't usually keep bananas in the freezer because we eat them too quickly! We've made this with frozen banana and with ice in it if the banana wasn't frozen and both worked well.

    • My oldest son lived on smoothies for a while. He still loves them now and then and enjoyed this one, too!

  • Yummy Pumpkin Pie Healthy Smoothie! This is perfect for Halloween party :) love this Pumpkin Pie Healthy Smoothie.

  • That is fantastic recipe for simple-but-healthy breakfast! Although you combine some ingredients that are easy to find at the supermarket, this smoothie can bring a high level of energy for a long day at work! Thanks for sharing!

    • That's why I like it, easy to find ingredients, but so good when put together! This one definitely kept me full for a long time.

  • Yum! I love all things pumpkin. I can't wait to try this delicious smoothie recipe!!

  • I'm not one to eat actual pumpkin pie but this smoothie looks so light and creamy that I think I could totally do this! It looks so tasty too! ;)

    • It's definitely different than pumpkin pie. I like both, but I prefer this over the pie most of the time.

  • I love to make smoothies at home, so I will add this to my list to try! It looks delicious. I love the flavor of pumpkin.

    • Smoothies are just so easy to throw together! There are so many ways to make them, and this is good for the fall season.

  • I love using frozen banana as my ice for smoothies. It's perfect and adds so much to the drink!

    • This was the first time we tried it with bananas. I usually like strawberries and use those frozen. It tastes so much better than adding ice and watering it down!

  • Never thought of adding pumpkin to our protein shakes, great idea! We will try it after our work out tomorrow.

  • I have been drinking my fair share of PSL since it came out so this is definitely right up my alley! I haven't made my own pumpkin puree before though. Is it okay to use canned?

    • I've used both canned and fresh with this smoothie. The fresh will always taste, well, more fresh. But the canned works just as well in it.

  • OH wow this sounds so good! I've never had apumpkin smoothie but I am here for all the pumpkin things. So going to try this!

    • This was a new one to me, too. But we figured we eat all types of other smoothies, why not have one for this season, too?!

  • Ooo I do love a good smoothie. Never thought about doing a pumpkin one before - great idea ready for the Halloween season xx

    • I love smoothies, too! Especially since they are so versatile to be able to change it for seasonal flavors.

  • Word up, everyone: she's right. DON'T USE TABLE SYRUP. Use the real deal if you want real taste. That said, I have to say, I have zero appetite with my current head cold, BUT this actually looks and sounds appealing enough that I might try it if I can motivate myself off the recliner lol...

    • It's so true! Real maple syrup is no comparison to the "other stuff" out there! I hope you feel better soon, this may be soothing to a head cold and give you more energy without a lot of effort to cook!

  • I am seeing this at the perfect time! I need to make more smoothies for my toddler because she is in a stage where she isn't eating as well as she used to. We will be trying this one out soon.

    • We did the same for both of my boys for a while. They weren't eating well so we had a lot of healthy smoothies. They didn't realize how much fruit and vegetables they were actually eating!

  • I’m not a huge fan of pumpkin but I do love that these are healthy. I bet those that like pumpkin would love these.

    • I'm not always the biggest fan of pumpkin either, but I do like this one. I completely understand, though!

  • Oooh, this looks delicious because I never had a banana smoothie. But, what can I use instead of a banana as I have a banana allergy>

    • Oh man, I don't know what my boys would do with a banana allergy, they eat them every day! For substitutes, you could try mangoes, pears, dates, applesauce, or papaya if you like any of those. It wouldn't have the exact same flavor, and I haven't tested those, but they could be a possible alternative.

  • Stephanie, this smoothie is simply genius! I'm so picky about ingredients in general and Iike all of the things you included in this smoothie. I'm definitely going to adopt it :)
