Rather than buying a premade packet, mix together your own fajita seasoning for a unique flavor all your own without the extras.
Jump to RecipeOver the last year, we have worked on reducing the amount of waste produced in our home. The biggest culprit of waste has always been the kitchen. Part of this waste reduction includes less packaging of foods. Through this, I’ve learned to make quite a few homemade staples, including our own fajita seasoning.
You may be thinking the same I did at first. Just because the seasoning isn’t packaged, the ingredients still come packaged. While this is true, the ingredients are all ones I already have in the kitchen. Therefore, I am not bringing in extra packaging, but using something I already have. Also, if you have access to a good bulk-buy store, then you could potentially make this completely waste-free. Unfortunately, there isn’t a store like this near me right now. I do make the effort to purchase my seasonings in glass jars instead of plastic.
Anyways, back to the recipe at hand. Tyler has been obsessed with tacos lately. And anything resembling a taco. I used to always purchase the packets of fajita and taco seasoning. But, one day, we wanted to make some fajitas and I forgot that little packet. Instead of running to the store, we decided to make our own.
I looked up the ingredients online for the McCormick Seasoning. From there, we started mixing a few things and tweaked it as we went. Eventually, we had a seasoning recipe that was just right for us. It isn’t too spicy so the boys and I can handle it. But it also has a lot of flavor.

It always good to reduce waste. By nature I am a fairly frugal person. It always pains me to see so much food being wasted in people’s homes and in restaurants.
In any case, that seasoning looks real good!
Me too! I feel like anything we can do, even little like making seasoning from scratch, still makes a difference.
This is a great idea for reducing waste… we try to make our own sauces and seasonings form scratch where possible too. We love fajitas so will have to try out your seasoning mix next time we have them.
It’s fun to try to make things at home rather than buying storebought. Give this one a try next time you make fajitas and let me know what you think.
I love love love fajitas – so I will 10000% be making this! 🙂
Yay! I hope you like the seasoning!
I hate those prepackaged mixes of ingredients I can’t pronounce so this recipe is a win! Reducing waste is a bonus!
Yes! So many things in the packages that I don’t know what they are. Some may not all be bad, but I still prefer to cook with foods I know.
Love the idea of making this from scratch and having no pack a gene! I’m definitely gonna try this one
It works well since they are all seasonings I already have, so it isn’t any extra packaging and ingredients I know.
I have never thought about making my own fajita seasoning and this is going to be made tomorrow. I usually make my own Haitian Spice to season meat. Now my pantry will have its own Marjie’s fajita seasoning. Thanks for sharing this, Stephanie.
Oh, that sounds good, too! I don’t know if I’ve ever had Haitian food before but would love to give it a try.
Not to mention that seasoning made fresh in the kitchen always tastes better than packaged stuff!
It’s so true! I love how fresh it tastes when homemade.
I can’t wait to try this. I make veggie fajitas all the time and this would be perfect to sprinkle on top while grilling.
I put vegetables in my fajitas, and this seasoning works well on those as well as the meat.
Omg fajitas are legit a favorite food of mine!!!! I never thought about making my own seasoning! Might just give this a try! Sounds tasty!!!
You should definitely give this a try the next time you make them. The seasoning tastes so fresh when it’s made from home.
It is such a wonderful idea and i always appreciate reducing the waste. Being an Indian I love my spices and I either grind and make them all at home or my mom gives them when I visit her and it makes a world of difference in my cooking.
I would love to try grinding my own spices at some point. Right now, the only one I do is peppercorn because I have a pepper grinder. But I bet those fresh spices are amazing!
I enjoy the occasional fajita and love it. I think it is also a great idea to make our own fresh spices from time to time.
It’s a lot of fun to make the spices at home because you have a lot more control over the flavor, too!
