In the past, I’ve made a few pull-apart breakfast recipes and they were always a hit with my family. We like easy meals, especially at breakfast since we are all hungry when we wake up, which is why I use refrigerated biscuits to make it quick.

If you want to use homemade biscuits, you’ll need many more ingredients including all-purpose flour, butter, sugar, and more. Usually, I prefer the made-from-scratch way, but that takes too long in the morning.

By mixing the brown sugar, heavy cream, and ground cinnamon, you are making an easy homemade caramel sauce for the coffee cake. While it isn’t perfect, any caramel lover will agree it has the right flavors without all of the work to make truly homemade caramel.

Why is it called a Coffee Cake if it doesn’t have Coffee in it?

The name coffee cake indicates a cake meant to eat with your morning coffee. Most of the time they have a crunchy streusel on top, but not always. Coffee cakes are typically soft and sweet and can be breakfast, brunch, or dessert. Coffee cake is flavored with comforting and warm flavors such as vanilla or cinnamon. Some coffee cakes include a filling of fruit, nuts, or chocolate chips to add even more flavor. While my original recipe doesn’t include those, you could certainly add them in.

Serving Suggestions

While this caramel coffee cake is delicious as-is, there are also some things you can do to dress it up. It would be delicious with a simple icing made from mixing powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and milk in a large bowl and then pouring it over the top of the cake. You could also add some flavored coffee instead of milk if you want to add coffee flavor to the cake.

Another option would be to top it with a little bit of cream cheese frosting, maple syrup, or caramel topping.

This cake would go great with a side of cinnamon apples or fresh apples and, of course, a cup of coffee.

Caramel Coffee Cake Step by Step

Ingredients

  • 2 cans refrigerated biscuits, flaky style
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon, ground

Preparation

Preheat the oven to 350F and grease a 10-inch fluted tube pan or bundt pan with nonstick spray.

Cut each biscuit into quarters and toss into the greased pan.

In a small bowl, whisk the brown sugar, heavy cream, and ground cinnamon until well combined.

Pour the sugar mixture evenly over the biscuits so it runs down the sides of the cake as it bakes.

Bake for about 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Cool cake on a wire rack for a few minutes before inverting it onto a serving platter. Serve warm.

Caramel Coffee Cake Leftovers

Storage: Let the cake come to room temperature then store the leftover coffee cake in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.

Reheating: The best way to reheat the coffee cake is in the oven or in the microwave. If the cake seems dry, add a bit of unsalted butter and let it melt onto the cake.

Freezing: You can freeze the cake in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.

    1. I didn’t think about that. Yes, biscuits are fluffy bread that we have either as a breakfast item with butter and jelly, or have with butter as a side for dinner 🙂
