Smoothies have been a staple in our house for many years now. I used to make one every morning when I was pregnant with Tyler, and he’s 7 years old now! Everyone in our house enjoys a delicious smoothie at any time of the day.

For a long time, we would just throw whatever sounds good at the time into a blender and call it a smoothie. But, you have to have a bit of precision to it. A smoothie requires a base, typically yogurt or milk for us. Then we add in fruits and/or veggies to give it substance and taste. If you want a sweet smoothie, you can also add vanilla extract or honey to it.

No matter how you make it, a smoothie is usually a great healthy option for a meal replacement. Tyler and Ryan love their strawberry banana smoothies. In the fall, I like to use some of our pumpkin puree from Halloween pumpkins to make a pumpkin pie smoothie.

But, my favorite smoothie has to be our dreamsicle protein smoothie. By mixing orange juice and bananas with vanilla protein powder, it tastes just like a dreamsicle. We don’t let the boys have these yet because of the protein powder, but Justin and I will have them any time during the day.

These make a great breakfast the mornings that we do a workout. It helps to cool us off and adds in the protein that our bodies need after the exercise.

Step by Step

Ingredients

  • 1 banana
  • 3/4 cup orange juice (no pulp)
  • 1/4 cup almond milk
  • 2 tbsp vanilla protein powder
  • 1 tbsp flaxseed (ground)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup ice
Dreamsicle Protein Smoothie Ingredients: orange juice, ice, banana, protein powder, coffee cream, flaxseed

Preparation

Add banana, orange juice, almond milk, vanilla protein powder, ground flaxseed, and vanilla extract to a blender. Top with ice until full. Blend until smooth, about 1 minute.

Leftovers

I would not suggest saving the dreamsicle protein smoothie as leftovers. Smoothies are best when they are consumed as soon as they are made. Otherwise, they tend to separate and the ice melts, making it have a very different taste and texture.

Dreamsicle Protein Smoothie FAQs

Which Protein Powder Should I Use?

There are a lot of options for protein powder. Of course, the first thing you should check is for any allergies to a specific brand. We generally like the Body Fortress brand of protein powder. I can get this from our local Walmart or I order it from Amazon. The price is about the same, so the last time we needed some I ordered online. Our store was completely out of vanilla and I don’t know how the other flavors would taste in the smoothie. Since it’s the only way we drink it, I didn’t want to try something different right now.

  1. This looks like a great milkshake for a post-workout or just after teaching young kids or doing something high energy. What would you substitute for bananas for someone with an allergy?

    1. You could try subbing in some applesauce for the bananas. It will make it a bit thinner, so you might also want to blend ina few cubes of ice to thicken it up again.

  2. Ohhhh I love dreamsicles so I feel like this would be such a fun way to mix up my smoothie game! I’m definitely trying this today!

  3. I just know that this tastes amazing and it doesn’t seem like you need too many ingredients to make it. I’m definitely going to be making this dreamsicle protein smoothie soon.
