When I was in middle school, I remember my best friend’s mom making homemade fudge all the time. I would start to ask for it whenever I was spending the night there. I never realized how easy it can be to make on your own. Recently, I found myself craving some chocolate fudge. I decided I would use two different types of chocolate to make double chocolate fudge.

Sweetened condensed milk is the base ingredient for this fudge. But I didn’t need an entire can. I also hate wasting food. When we only needed a small amount of sweetened condensed milk for Banana Cream Puppy Chow, I started looking for ways to use the rest. The fudge results were overwhelming. After looking at a few recipes, we came up with our own.

This fudge was addicting! I have to be careful when I make it because I will grab a piece every time I walk past the kitchen. Which is often since it’s in the middle of my house!

You can use whatever chocolate you prefer. I made this with half semi-sweet morsels and half dark chocolate chips. Again, I didn’t want to waste food. Typically, I am not a fan of dark chocolate. But when my brother-in-law moved out of state he gave us a bunch of food which included a partial bag of dark chocolate chips. I knew they would have to be cooked into something. So the fudge was perfect!

I was a bit worried that the fudge wouldn’t be sweet enough. Dark chocolate is more bitter, and semi-sweet is, well, only partially sweet! But the sweetened condensed milk helped to balance it out.

Once our double chocolate fudge was cool, we sprinkled just a bit of kosher salt on top. It was just enough to give that sweet and salty combination that works so well.

Microwave vs Saucepan

For this recipe, I wanted to keep it very simple and prepared the chocolate mixture in the microwave. Since these are simple ingredients that don’t need to be cooked, this was the best way to prepare my double chocolate fudge.

For other fudge recipes, though, I have used a heavy saucepan to prepare the fudge. When doing this, you’ll want to heat the sweetened condensed milk and chocolate in a double boiler over medium heat to prevent the chocolate from seizing up.

Topping Suggestions

There are a few things you could add to garnish the brownies if you’d like. Top brownies with marshmallow cream, a little bit of shredded chocolate, or a semi-sweet chocolate layer. You can sprinkle them with cocoa powder or icing sugar. Another option is to add 1/2 cup walnuts to the fudge if you want a chocolate nut fudge.

Hardened Chocolate

If your chocolate hardens or seizes up, add a small amount of coconut oil to the chocolate and stir it in. This should loosen the chocolate and make it soft again. Use a rubber spatula to stir the chocolate.

Double Chocolate Fudge Step by Step

Ingredients

  • 10 oz sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 3/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp salt

Preparation

Line an 8×8 baking dish with parchment paper. Make sure the parchment paper goes up the side of the pan. In a large bowl that’s microwave safe, combine the chocolate chips with the sweetened condensed milk. Microwave on high until they are melted, stirring every 30 seconds. Don’t overheat or the chocolate will seize up. Stir in the vanilla extract.

Pour the fudge into the prepared pan or a nonstick square pan. Refrigerate for about one hour to cool.
