Making your own sushi at home saves a lot of money as it can be expensive to eat out at a sushi bar. When you make it at home, you are purchasing your ingredients, but it ends up being much cheaper. We also like to make food from scratch so we can customize exactly what is in there.

The crunchy sushi roll is what’s known as an inside-out roll. This means the rice is on the outside of the roll with the seaweed in the middle. These are a little harder to roll, but they can still be done. I find it easier to lay a piece of plastic wrap on the sushi mat before preparing so the rice doesn’t get stuck in the parts of the mat.

You can serve your sushi roll with soy sauce, eel sauce, spicy sauce, unagi sauce, spicy mayonnaise, teriyaki sauce, or lemon juice. All are great options depending on if you want to keep the sushi recipe mild or spicy, bold or sweet, etc.

Tip: You’ll need a few things close by when working with seaweed and sushi rice. Have a small bowl with cold water to dip your fingers in before touching the rice. Then keep a small hand towel close to dry your hands when touching the seaweed or other main ingredients.

Note: To make homemade toasted panko bread crumbs, add them to a large skillet with some olive oil over medium heat. Toast, stirring often until they are golden brown.

Crunchy Roll Sushi Recipe Step by Step

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet seaweed or nori sheet
  • 1/2 cup sushi rice, prepared
  • 4 pieces shrimp tempura
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1/3 cup panko breadcrumbs, toasted to golden brown

Preparation

Lay a sheet of nori or seaweed on a sushi mat or bamboo mat with the rough side up.

Spread the prepared sushi rice on the seaweed until close to the edges then flip it over so the rice is on the bottom.

Lay the tempura shrimp in a single layer in a straight line at one edge of the nori wraps.

Add the avocado slices on top of the shrimp.

Carefully use the bamboo mat to roll the sushi with the rice on the outside.

Sprinkle the toasted panko bread crumbs on the top of the roll and gently press them into the rice so they stick to form the crunchy topping.

Use a very sharp knife to cut into slices about 1/2 inch thick.

  1. I have never thought to make my own sushi but you’re right – it very expensive to eat it out. So this is a brilliant idea and you’ve inspired me!

  2. We’ve made sushi rolls at home before and it is just the best! Not only does it save us a ton of money (because sushi these days feel like an arm and a leg and then some…) but we didn’t realize just how easy it was until we’ve made them. I usually use tofu with our sushi but I am going to try out your chicken next time!

My girls have been asking me to make sushi as they’re obsessed. I love the idea of combining shrimp tempura and avocado inside the rolls. These must taste amazing!!!

  4. I love sushi but I’ve never had something like this before. At least, not lately! I’ve always wanted to make my own sushi but could never find the right ingredients and my husband isn’t too keen on it, so it would just be me.

I love eating sushi and it’s my go-to food when we dine out. But somehow I have still not attempted to make it at home. You make it look so simple and tempt me to try making this at home. I just might make the sushi following your recipe.

  9. Oh my gosh this looks so good! I always eat sushi when I go out, but I have yet to try making any recipes at home. I just might have to now after seeing this recipe!

We love sushi. The thought of making it myself scares me, but my boyfriend has been mentioning it, so I am sharing this with him.
