Thanksgiving dinner wouldn’t be complete without Green Bean Casserole. It’s salty and crispy with a creamy sauce perfect for any holiday meal.
Jump to RecipeGreen bean casserole is a classic recipe at every Thanksgiving table I’ve ever sat at. It doesn’t matter which family members we are with, there’s always green bean casserole. When I was a kid, I remember my mom being the one in charge of the green bean casserole and the ambrosia salad every holiday season.
This easy green bean casserole recipe is made using a few canned items. That’s what helps to make it so quick to put together. But, if you want, you could also make it from scratch. I’ve never made homemade cream of mushroom soup, but you can find a recipe here. However, I have made homemade cream of chicken soup and the cooking process was very easy.
We all know the Thanksgiving turkey is the star of the show at almost any holiday table, but this is the best green bean casserole and makes a perfect side dish for the bird.
While the recipe is written to have simple ingredients, you can also work with fresh ingredients if you choose. Instead of canned green beans try making it with fresh green beans. Just make sure you blanch them before cooking. As for the crispy onions, you can make those homemade as well. I’ve done it a few times, although this recipe used the canned onions. Next time, though, I am going to work on making the whole recipe from scratch.
How to Make Ahead
While green bean casserole is best when served immediately after cooking, it is possible to make it ahead of time.
Refrigerator: If you plan to make it within 1-2 days, prepare the casserole without cooking or adding the fried onions to the top. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Let it come almost to room temperature before placing it in the oven to avoid your glass dish shattering.
Freezer: You can also make the green bean casserole up to 1 month ahead of time and freeze it. Prepare the base of the casserole, cover the whole thing tightly with aluminum foil, and place it in the freezer. Remove the casserole from the freezer the night before and let it thaw in the refrigerator. Then bring to room temperature before baking so your dish doesn’t shatter when going from the cold of the refrigerator to the hot oven.

Green Bean Casserole Step by Step
Ingredients
- 10.5 oz cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp soy sauce
- 29 oz French-cut green beans, drained
- 6 oz French fried onions

Preparation
Heat the oven to 350F.
Stir the canned soup, milk, soy sauce, green beans, and half of the crispy fried onions in a large mixing bowl.

Add to a 2-quart casserole dish and season with pepper if desired.

Bake for 25 minutes until hot and bubbly.

Take the baking dish out of the oven, stir the bean mixture, and top with the remaining fried onions.

Bake another 5 minutes or until the onion topping is golden brown.
Season with black pepper, if desired, and serve warm.

Green Bean Casserole Leftovers
Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
Reheating: The best way to reheat French’s green bean casserole is in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring often, until it’s warmed through.
Freezing: Because of the crispy topping, I don’t suggest freezing leftover green bean casserole. That will get soggy and mushy when the casserole is thawed.
