Use the bread machine to make an easy dough perfect for homemade cinnamon rolls that come out light and fluffy every time.
Jump to RecipeBig Breakfast Sunday in our house started from Cinnamon Roll Sunday at my sister’s house. She makes cinnamon rolls every Sunday. After we visited, my boys asked if we could do the same. We decided to do different things every week. But, we still go back to cinnamon rolls often.
Last week we decided to try a new way of making homemade cinnamon rolls. I’ve mentioned many times that I love my bread machine, so I wanted to use it. I made the dough in the machine and used that to make cinnamon rolls. It took a little while since the dough setting is an hour and a half. But, in the end, the rolls were soft and fluffy. It made perfect cinnamon rolls.
Bonus: since it was all from scratch, no bad ingredients. I was able to control everything that went into the recipe.

Cinnamon Rolls Step by Step
Ingredients
Dough
- 1 1/3 cup water
- 8 tbsp butter (cut into small chunks)
- 5 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp salt
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups bread flour
- ¼ cup powdered milk
- 1 tbsp dry-active yeast
Filling
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 tbsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter (melted)
Icing
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 5 tbsp milk
Preparation
Place all of the dough ingredients in a bread machine and set it to the dough setting. It helps to know how long your machine takes to be able to plan the meal. The bread machine I have takes an hour and a half to make the dough.
Once the dough finishes, take it out of the machine and separate it into two halves. Preheat the oven to 350F.

Roll the first half out into a rectangle about 12″ x 18″. Make sure the dough doesn’t get too thin.

Brush half of the melted butter over the dough. In a small mixing bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon then sprinkle half of it over the buttered dough.

Roll the dough up, starting at the smaller side.

Cut the dough into one-inch pieces. Place them close together in a baking dish or on a warm baking stone and bake for about 15-20 minutes, until they are golden brown.

Repeat the process with the other half of the dough while the first batch bakes. Prepare the icing by mixing the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until it’s smooth.

Serve the cinnamon rolls warm drizzled with the icing.

Freshly baked cinnamon rolls sound like the perfect way to start a Sunday! That’s definitely a tradition I need to start in our house…
It’s so fun, and the boys love it! We’ve tried multiple cinnamon roll recipes now and enjoyed them all for different reasons.
So here’s the deal: We’re going to perfect teleportation. And I’m going to press a button. And you and your bread machine are going to magically appear in my kitchen and do your thing ;)…
Seriously, these look SO good – must-try some weekend when (for a change) we’re all in town…
Oh man, that would be so wonderful, wouldn’t it?! Or you could just teleport here when they are ready 🙂
Those look yummy and quite tasty. I have a bread machine and I’ve never used it. I got it for a wedding gift 23 years ago. Maybe I should dust it off. 😁
Oh wow, you should definitely get it out! I use mine about once a month or so, sometimes more than that.
I did not know you could make cinnamon rolls in a bread machine! I have never owned a bread machine, but I want to buy one.
Well, I haven’t figured out how to make them completely in there. But you can use the machine for the dough, which is what I do for these and other recipes such as homemade pizza.
I love cinnamon rolls. I never thought of making them with a bread machine. I will have to try this sometime.
It makes it so easy to get the dough prepared.
Is that the way we are supposed to put the icing on cinnamon buns? A drizzle?! I have always spread the icing. No wonder I never have enough!
Hah, well it does keep you from using too much. We make our own icing for these, so I can always double the recipe if we need more!
My husband hates anything with cinnamon but it’s one of my favorites. He travels a lot for work so of course I always use it as an opportunity to bake lots of cinnamon things. Lol. I can’t wait to try this!
I don’t think I’ve heard of someone who doesn’t like cinnamon before! My mom travels a lot so that’s when my dad makes all the seafood that she is allergic too, so I know exactly what you mean about making them when he isn’t there!
Oh wow what a fab machine. I love the look of these and cinnamon rolls are one of our family favs. will give these a try xx
I love using the bread machine. It does so much more than just a loaf of bread!
So yummy!!! Cinnamon rolls are always a hit with the family! So need to make these one Sunday morning! I’m sure they would be a hit.
They always go over well here, too. My boys love anything sweet. We enjoy doing “big breakfast Sunday” and have tried a few different ways of making cinnamon rolls.
This looks yummy! Cinnamon rolls are my favorite but I haven’t really tried making one. I think this will help me a lot.
There are so many ways to make cinnamon rolls. This one uses the bread machine for the dough, but if you search cinnamon rolls on here I have a few different recipes.
I’m seriously thinking to get the bread machine! I love how many delicious recipes you can make with this. I really love cinnamon rolls, they are one of my favorite desserts
It’s such a great machine to have. It isn’t just for bread, but I use it for dough (like this recipe) a lot, too.
