When cooking in the fall, apples are a must. Apple cider chicken combines that crunchy, tart apple taste with a cider sauce over chicken.
Jump to RecipeWhen I think of fall cooking, I think of warm comfort foods. I think of everything with pumpkin and apples. It’s time to start cooking those fall foods, so I am starting with this apple cider chicken. It’s topped with delicious apples and a yummy sauce.
Now, I know what you’re thinking… chicken and apples don’t usually go together. I wouldn’t have thought pork and apples would either, but it’s a great combination. And if it works with pork, why not try it with apples?

Apple Cider Chicken Step by Step
Ingredients
- 1 lb chicken breast, boneless, skinless
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 2 apples, granny smith, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup green onion, sliced
- 1 tsp thyme, dried
- 1/2 cup spiced apple cider
- 3/4 cup chicken broth
- 1 tbsp sour cream
- 1 tsp parsley, dried

Preparation
Heat 1 tbsp olive oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet. Add the chicken and season with salt and pepper. Cook until done, at least 5-6 minutes per side.

Remove the chicken from the pan and add the remaining 1 tbsp oil, lowering the heat to medium. Add the apples, green onions, and thyme. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, until slightly softened.

Pour in the apple cider and chicken broth and bring to a simmer for 3-4 minutes.

Place the chicken back in the pan and simmer for about 5-7 minutes to warm the chicken.

Remove the chicken and place it on serving plates. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the sour cream and parsley.

Spoon the warm sauce over the chicken and serve immediately.

Leftovers
We tried saving leftovers of apple cider chicken, and it didn’t hold up well. The chicken itself was ok, but the sauce and apples became mushy. I suggest only making as much as you need, since it doesn’t keep for long.

Apple Cider Chicken FAQs
Spiced apple cider has other seasonings added to it. The spices may vary based on brand, but it usually includes cinnamon, cloves, and allspice.
It’s recommended that you stick with Granny Smith apples. They balance out the recipe well and work with the apple cider. If you must make a substitution, I would try another tart apple, such as the Pink Lady, Braeburn, or McIntosh.

Oh I’m intrigued! This sounds good but I’m not the biggest Apple cider fan.
You don’t taste the cider part as much as you do the apples. So if you like cooked apples you may still like this one.
These looks delicious, yummmmm!!! I can’t wait to make your recipe, can’t wait!!! So good!!!
They were yummy and something very different from what we normally eat.
I have never thought apple cider and chicken would go oh so well together. I have to try this recipe to try the taste, it sounds unique.
It’s definitely something different than normal for us, but it worked well!
This is interesting and looks tasty. I’m always trying to find things my family will eat. My daughter might actually eat this without throwing it off her high chair.
Oh gosh, I remember those days! I mean, my youngest is 6 and still makes a mess, but not quite like a toddler does.
I finally have access to my kitchen, and pots and pans! And this recipe looks exactly what I need for an Autumn dinner. Thanks so much for sharing!
Yay! I’ve had a few times without access to the kitchen and it’s so hard!

That’s a good way to use the apples. This is perfect for Fall.
I’d rather find a way to use them before just tossing in the compost!
I have never heard of apples and chicken before, I will have to give this a go!
I’d only had it once before making this. Apples go well with pork, so I figured why not chicken, too?!
I cannot wait to make this for the family, looks so delicious and different from what I normally cook
