2017 Garden Update #9

Lately we have been able to get a lot out of our little backyard garden! We’ve been using the lettuce for salads, grilling up some of the squash to go with dinners, and using the herbs in a lot of our meals.

For some reason, our cilantro is bolting, so we haven’t been able to use any of that recently. The rest of the herbs are flourishing, and the garlic I planted a few weeks ago seems to be growing well, but it isn’t ready to harvest just yet.

Most of the vegetables are still green, but a lot of them aren’t producing still. We did use some celery for dinner last night and it was still small, but very fresh tasting. We also used some of the green onion in the same recipe. It’s so nice to be able to go out in the backyard and grab the fresh foods we want rather than having to get them from the store. A few of the green peppers are growing well, and probably almost getting big enough to pick. There’s also a yellow pepper growing, but it isn’t yellow just yet. I planted some seeds from a red pepper and those are starting to sprout as well.

Even though I don’t know if they will ever actually produce anything, the banana trees are still my favorite plant in the backyard. Those and and canna lilies. I love how much green they add to the yard, and they just look so tropical and warm.

The blackberry bush is still growing out of control, and we need to build something for it to grow in to keep it contained in the garden bed. It’s starting to grow over into the grass. The strawberry bushes are getting larger, and there are a few strawberries growing, but we’ve also caught the birds chewing on them.

Finally, we’ve had some of the asiatic lilies in the front yard blooming and a couple of the white ones opened up the other day. Now one of the orange flowers and one of the white flowers have bloomed. I love how they look, and they are so colorful. I just wish they lasted a little longer.
